Born in Bebington, a small English town south of Liverpool, Burns rose to fame in the 1980s as part of a wave of pop artists who favoured a glam, androgynous look. Dead or Alive, which he founded, was perhaps most famous for the 1984 single You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), a track that topped the charts around the world.
More recently, he appeared on reality TV shows, including competition series Celebrity Big Brother in 2006 and on the show Celebrity Botched Up Bodies in September, during which he discussed the numerous plastic surgery procedures he had undergone.
He was set to promote a box set of Dead or Alive's back catalog release later this week.
