Habiba Nosheen, an award-winning young journalist and filmmaker, is joining CBC-TV's investigative series the fifth estate

Nosheen immigrated to Canada as a refugee, arriving at the age of nine with her family.

The new posting marks a return, of sorts, for Canadian Nosheen: she started her journalism career reporting for CBC Radio from her native Pakistan.

She's worked for National Public Radio, where her Guatemala massacre documentary What Happened at Dos Erres? earned her a Peabody Award as well as other honours.

Her 2013 project Outlawed in Pakistan, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and aired on Frontline, won an Emmy. A year later, she joined 60 Minutes, where her reporting garnered further accolades. Her writing has also appeared in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, the BBC and ProPublica.

"the fifth estate has a long-standing history of producing industry-leading journalism for decades. I look forward to joining the team to continue that tradition," Nosheen said in a statement.

Jennifer McGuire, general manager and editor-in-chief of CBC News, hailed Nosheen's "wealth of investigative experience and journalistic passion.

"Her award-winning investigations for shows such as 60 Minutes and Frontline are renowned in the industry, and she will further the fifth estate's acclaimed leadership in provocative and fearless journalism."

Nosheen will join existing hosts Gillian Findlay, Bob McKeown and Mark Kelley as the 42nd season of the fifth estate premieres on CBC-TV on Oct. 21.
